Chapter Chat: Wonder

Last week my friends Jonty and Gabe and I worked on a Chapter Chat activity. The activity we chose to do was building Manhattan city with Lego.  It took about 4 days to complete our lego Manhattan city.

We took the pictures from the front and top, and put it on a Google Drawing with the real picture of Manhattan city at the top.

Here is our Lego Manhattan city that we made.

I hope you liked our Chapter Chat activity.
Have you made anything like this with Lego?

Animal report

Last term we wrote an animal report. First we all chose an animal to do it on, and I chose a Siberian tiger. Then we had to find facts about the animal. The facts we needed to find out about the animal was, classification, physical features, habitat, feeding behaviour, reproduction, social behaviour and predators. With the notes we had we made it into paragraphs. Here is my finished work that I finished on Google Slides.

I hope you learnt something from my slide. ^_^

Subtraction strategies

This year Jackson's Studio Rm 18 has been doing some problem solving. We learnt how to solve subtraction, addition, mutiplication, and division question's easily. Today I am going to teach you two subtraction strategies.

This is my first stratergy, and this one is called, equal adjustments. The reason I like this strategy is because it is short, and easy to understand.

       264-196=68
+4   +4
      268-200=68

This is the second stratergy that I am going to show you. This one is called Place Value. I like this stratergy, because it is simple to remember.

264-196=
264-100=164
164-90=74
74-8=68

I hope you learnt something, have a great day.^_^

Holes Chapter Chat.

This term our class participated again in Chapter Chat, a twitter-book chat. This term we read ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar. The book was about a boy called, Stanley Yelnats. He never has good luck, and he is making a plan to escape Camp Green Lake. Talking about Camp Green Lake it is the most vast, disgusting place you could ever land in, it only has 2 trees, hard dry dirt and holes filled with dangerous creatures.

Each fortnight we completed various activities and answered questions based on what we had read. We then shared our activities and answers on Twitter with Room 20.

Here are two activities that I have completed on the book Holes.

My first activity is a map of where they went in the book, then if you follow the line it will show the order of where they went. So they first went to is the wreck/rec room then he headed to tent D which is where he had to sleep. The next place he went was to the lake where they dig holes, and then he went to the big thumb.

The second activity is one where you needed to make your own nickname for if you went to Camp Green Lake. For example my name would be Trouble, because I'm a trouble maker.

I hope you enjoyed my activities. Which one was your favourite?

Zentangle art

This term we have been busy finishing our calendar art. Each year at our school we do a piece of art that can go on calendars, diaries or cards. Our parents can then buy these for gifts, if they choose.
This year our class did our calendar art around the theme Zentangle.

First we looked at different Zentangle patterns and then we practised drawing these patterns in our art book, before doing our good copy.

Here is my finished calendar art for 2017.

I hope you enjoyed it have you done anything like this before?

Leave me a comment to let me know what you think of my art.

Robot artwork

Over the last term and a bit we have been doing different pieces of robot art for our school’s Art Exhibition later in the term. Here is my newspaper robot art. This is how I made it. I first got out a piece of newspaper and then cut out some pieces of newspaper. I got out a coloured piece of paper and then gently put the newspaper on it. I cut out more pieces then created an art piece. The things I used were a vivid, newspaper, coloured paper, a glue stick, and a pair of scissors. It took me a couple of art sessions to make my newspaper robot.

I hope you enjoy my robot artwork. Have you ever done any robot art?

PowToon Book Report

We have been learning how to create a book report with PowToon. I have made my animated book report on Ms Bixby's Last Day. Ms Bixby's Last Day was our serial story in Term 2 that we read as part of Chapter Chat. The book was written by John David Anderson.

I hope you enjoy my PowToon book report.
Have you read Ms Bixby’s Last Day?

Chapter Chat

This term Jacksons Studio (Rm18) has Joined Chapter Chat, Chapter chat is a Twitter-book chat. Each Friday we go into Twitter and share our activities to the other New Zealand Schools, the activities are based on the book we read in class. The book we read was Ms Bixby's Last Day. Every Friday we join some other New Zealand students, and talk about the book. Have you ever read the book?

Here are two activities I did with my friends.

Here I have route of where Steve, Topher, and Brand have been in the story which started off at the school then went to Michelle's Bakery, then they traveled to Alexander's bookstore. After that they went to McDonalds and finally got to St Mary's Hospital.

My second activity is showing Ms Bixby's gravestone. Her full name is Margaret Eleanor Bixby.

Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed my activities.

Library Challenge Writing

On the 18th of May I went to Halswell Library. Some of the things I did were reading books, playing games and eating at the cafe. Here is my Library poem where I have used my senses to describe the best thing I did at the Library.

LIBRARY CHALLENGE

I heard
The wind howling, as I walked to the colossal library.

I heard
The people making coffees at the cafe, because there were lots of people waiting.

I saw
The staff cleaning the shelves, while I was playing on the computer.

I felt
The keyboard gently touching my fingers, as I was playing the game on the flash computer.

I felt
The smooth bread touch my mouth, while I was eating the divine hamburger.

I wondered
How long we would stay at the library, because there were some new books which looked interesting.

I wondered
If we will get some books from the library, because there were a lot of Treehouse
books.

I hope you enjoyed my poem. What do you like to do when you go to library?

Multiplication problem solving.

Last week our class was doing some problem solving. We were learning how to solve multiplication problems by using different strategies.

Here is one of my questions that I solved with my maths mate.
4x54

I have decided to use the strategies place value and rounding and compensating.

Here is my strategy for rounding, and compensating.
4x54=216
+(4x6)=24
4x60=240
240-24(4x6)=216

This is my strategy for place value.

4x54=216
4x50=200
4x4=16
200+16=216

Hope you learned something from this.

Thank you ^_^

Diorama

Last term for Home Learning we constructed Red Rocks Dioramas to show our understanding of the novel we read "Red Rocks". At the end of last term we bought our creations to school and we enjoyed sharing them with our class and other Legend classes. My scene shows the part when Jake went to the movie theatre, because his dad was talking with Cara and he didn't want to get interrupted. The things I used to make my diorama were an egg box, shoe boxes, paper, toys and Happy Meal boxes we got from McDonalds and some cards that we got from Countdown.

Here is a photo of my finished Red Rocks diorama.

You can read a book, and make a diorama as  well.

Subtraction Problem Solving - Show Me

In Jackson's Studio on Friday we learnt about the iPad app Show Me. Show Me is where you turn your iPad into an interactive whiteboard! It allows you to record voice-over whiteboard tutorials and share them online. It's an amazingly simple app that anyone can use! We have been using Show Me to record how we solved various maths problems.

Take a look at my Show Me video below, where I have created a video on how to solve subtraction problems using the strategy equal adjustments.

Hope you learned something from my work :)

Problem Solving

Last week our class was doing some problem solving. We were learning how to solve subtraction problems by using different strategies. Feel free to come and comment on my blog.

Here is one of my questions that I solved with my maths mate.

This is a strategy called Place Value

16 900 - 12 750 = ?
16 900 - 10 000 = 6900
6900 - 2000 = 4900
4900 - 700 = 4200
4200 - 50 = 4150

This strategy is called Equal Adjustments

16900-12750=?
+250 +250
17150-13000=4150

Hope you have learnt something from this.

Holiday Challenge

In Jackson Studio (Rm 18) we have been writing a poem called Holiday Challenge. This writing is about my holiday at Hanmer Springs. Feel free to comment on my post. I hope you enjoy it:)

Here is my Holiday Challenge.

I heard my sister screeching as she went down the extremely dark water slide.

I heard my mum calling us to eat her divine food for lunch.

I saw my Mum go in the boiling hot spa.

I felt the rain slightly touch my body, while I was walking on the damp stairs.

I felt the cold breeze sweep against me while I was eating outside the cafe.

I wondered if I could go down the slide faster than my Dad.

I wondered if I would dive in to the deep water.
